ERRCS / BDA Systems in Austin, Texas

Black Signaling Systems is now serving Austin. We deliver in-building emergency responder radio coverage systems (ERRCS / BDA) for general contractors, electrical contractors, and building owners, managing design and installation through trusted, qualified partners. Headquartered in El Paso, we bring a clear, survey-first process to Austin projects, from the first measurement to annual recertification.

Austin's requirements

Effective July 10, 2025, the City of Austin adopted the 2024 International Fire Code with local amendments. Emergency responder radio coverage falls under IFC Section 510, with NFPA 1221 / NFPA 1225 guiding design, installation, and testing. Austin has a history of locally amending its radio coverage provisions, and local amendments vary between code cycles, so we confirm the current requirements with the AHJ before any work begins.

The Authority Having Jurisdiction is the Austin Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office. Projects in surrounding cities and unincorporated areas of Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties may fall under a different fire authority, and we confirm jurisdiction at the start of each job.

Building in a fast-moving market

Austin's pace of construction means radio coverage often surfaces late, when the schedule is tightest. Mixed-use towers, structured parking, and buildings with energy-efficient glass are common places for public-safety radio to drop off. A survey at the right moment, once the building envelope is substantially complete, keeps the requirement from turning into a Certificate of Occupancy delay.

What we do

  • RF Coverage Survey: floor-by-floor measurements and a clear pass or fail picture.

  • Design and AHJ Coordination: system design through qualified design partners and submittal coordination with the Fire Marshal's Office.

  • Installation: managed installation of donor antenna, bi-directional amplifier, indoor antennas, cabling, battery backup, and fire-alarm supervision.

  • Acceptance Testing and Documentation: testing and paperwork for sign-off.

  • Annual Maintenance and Recertification: ongoing testing to stay compliant.
