Annual ERRCS Testing, Maintenance, and Recertification
An emergency responder radio system is not a one-time installation. Like other life-safety systems, it has to keep working, and the code expects proof. Black Signaling Systems performs annual testing, maintenance, and recertification so your building stays compliant and your system stays ready for the day responders need it.
Why annual testing matters
International Fire Code (IFC) Section 510 and NFPA 1221 / NFPA 1225 call for ongoing testing of in-building emergency responder radio systems. Buildings change over time. New walls, tenant build-outs, and equipment can affect coverage. Batteries age. Radio networks are upgraded or retuned. Annual testing catches these issues before an inspector or an emergency does.
Local amendments vary, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) may set its own schedule, test procedure, or reporting format. We confirm those requirements with the AHJ and test to them.
What annual service includes
Coverage testing: signal measurements on each floor to confirm the building still meets the required coverage levels.
Equipment checks: bi-directional amplifier (BDA) settings, gain, and operation; donor and indoor antennas; and cabling.
Battery backup: confirmation that standby power performs as required.
Fire-alarm supervision: verification that trouble and failure signals report correctly.
Documentation: a written test record you can keep on file and hand to an inspector.
If something does not pass, we explain what failed and what it takes to fix it.
For building owners and property managers
Annual testing is the owner's responsibility once the system is accepted. If you inherited a building with an existing system, you may not know when it was last tested or who installed it. We can test systems installed by others, establish a baseline, and keep you on schedule going forward.
Renovations, new tenants, and changes in occupancy can also affect coverage requirements. If any of those are planned, it is a good time to test.
Why work with us
Rick Black, owner of Black Signaling Systems, holds an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL, PG00081476). He works directly with each client and gives you a straight answer: if your system passes, we tell you; if it does not, we show you the path to fix it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often does an ERRCS system need to be tested?
Generally at least once a year, plus after certain modifications. Your AHJ may have additional requirements, and we confirm them for your building.
Can you test a system that another company installed?
Yes. We test, maintain, and recertify existing systems regardless of who installed them.
What do I receive after testing?
A written test record showing the results, any issues found, and recommended corrections. Keep it on file for your next fire inspection.
